Care of Your AHT
AHTs are cared for like most dogs. They require veterinary exams, vaccinations, heartworm care, grooming and dental care. The extra care this breed requires includes more regular bathing, with a mild soap (I prefer baby wash with Oatmeal by Gerber.) I use Lubriderm after each bath for my dogs and they have wonderful skin. The dogs are bathed anywhere from twice a week to twice a month, depending on the skin of your dog. A more oily, active, sweaty dog would be bathed more regularly. They do need sunscreen or light clothing in the sun. They also need warm clothing in the cold. Click here for a Great place to find clothes! As this dog has no protective coat, you should think of it as you think of yourself. If you're cold and need clothes, so do they. If the sun would burn a fair person, it would burn them. It their skin is dry, they need some lotion. They will need their nails trimmed like any other dog does. Many minor skin problems resolve well with Aloe Vera. I used this on my dogs' puppy pimples and they went away very quickly. Some people like to wipe their dogs down with hypoallergenic baby wipes, others have reactions to them. Many things depend on the dog. Just like people's skin varies from person to person so too from dog to dog. These dogs are active and require lots of exercise. A fenced yard is a must. These dogs can not be exposed to the elements for extended periods of time without supervision. They can be overwhelmed by heat or cold quickly. In many ways, they are like having a toddler.
